About the museum
Opened in 1902 in a pink neoclassical building on Tahrir Square, this was the first great museum of Egyptian antiquities. It still holds well over 100,000 objects, from statues and painted coffins to papyri, tools and jewelry, many of them in the wooden display cases of the early 1900s, which give the building the feel of a museum of its own. A guide is the best way through it, as the rooms are packed and few objects have long labels.
